🔹 What is Amputation?

Amputation is the surgical removal of a limb or part of a limb due to disease, injury, or complications that prevent normal function or threaten a patient’s health. It may involve removal of a toe, finger, hand, foot, or a portion of the arm or leg.

🔹 Causes of Amputation

Amputations can occur for several medical or traumatic reasons, including:

    • Road traffic accidents

    • Industrial/machinery injuries

    • Severe burns or crush injuries

  2. Peripheral Vascular Disease (PVD)

    • Poor blood circulation due to atherosclerosis

    • Ischemia leading to tissue death (gangrene)

  3. Diabetes Mellitus

    • Diabetic neuropathy and vascular complications

    • Infected ulcers or wounds that fail to heal

  4. Infections

    • Severe, spreading infections unresponsive to antibiotics

    • Osteomyelitis (bone infection)

  5. Cancer

    • Malignant bone or soft tissue tumors (e.g., osteosarcoma)

  6. Congenital Limb Deficiency

    • Rarely, some children are born with missing or underdeveloped limbs requiring surgical correction.

🔹 Management After Amputation

1. Acute Post-Operative Care

  • Pain control (medication, nerve blocks, psychological support)

  • Wound healing and infection prevention

  • Management of swelling with compression dressings or stump socks

2. Rehabilitation

  • Physiotherapy: Muscle strengthening, mobility training

  • Occupational therapy: Training for daily activities

  • Psychological support: Coping strategies, mental health care

3. Prosthetic Fitting

  • Once healing is complete, prosthetic devices may be fitted

  • Proper stump care and use of prosthetic socks/liners improve comfort and fit

4. Long-Term Management

  • Regular medical check-ups for stump health
